Background: Norway is a second largest gas supplier for Germany

Norway is a second largest gas supplier for Germany. In the past year originated according to data of the Federal association of the German gas and water management (BGW) about 27 per cent of the imported goods from the Scandinavian state. That corresponds to a quantity of approximately 28 billion cubic meters - with rising tendency. Two years before the portion of Norwegian gas was with approximately 24 per cent. According to estimate of the German market leader E.ON Ruhr gas to 2010 the portion will rise to approximately 28 per cent.

The majority of the natural gas for private households and the economy in Germany comes from the foreign country. Only about 15 per cent originated in the past year from the inland. Particularly in Lower Saxony the German natural gas is promoted. The supplier for the German market, largest with distance, is Russia. From there came 2006 about 35 per cent of the imported goods. Third-most important natural gas supplier are with 19 per cent the Netherlands. The remaining four per cent distributed themselves on Denmark, Great Britain and other countries.
